Brief
Our brief was to develop an Environment Management System to replace the one that had fallen into disuse. The key objective was to enable the EMS to support the operation of the Facilities Management Team in supporting the science across the Campus.
Wellcome Genome Campus
The Wellcome Genome Campus is a scientific research and genomic sequencing site based in its own grounds near Cambridge. The Campus consists of offices, research laboratories, conference centre and accommodation, data centre and all the facilities required to support some 2000 people on site. In addition, there are extensive grounds and wetlands supported by Natural England, and a Grade II mansion.
Over the years as the site has expanded there have been significant steps in improving the environmental and energy management of the site including renewable energy projects, waste management projects and effective transport strategies to improve the impact of many hundreds of
cars travelling to the site each day.
The Challenge
Developing a management system that meets the requirements of the moment but knowing that it will need to continue to grow and expand, incorporating other requirements such as those of Energy Management and Asset Management.
The Solution
Working from the legacy system of old documents, it was possible to identify key Aspects and Impacts. However, it was also necessary to conduct a full gap analysis across the Campus identifying strengths and weaknesses of the previous system.
The challenge was then to produce a management system that met the requirements of the Facilities Management Team, whilst encompassing the aims and strategies of the whole Campus.
The success of this was demonstrated by the recertification of the EMS to ISO 14001 and in dues course the incorporation and certification of the Energy Management Systems to ISO 50001. In turn, this formed the basis of the Asset Management System that has now been certified to ISO 55001.
