Brief
Our brief was to develop and support Quality, Environmental and Health & Safety Management Systems for a construction company working as a sub-contractor on a number of high-profile projects.
Galostar Ltd
Galostar Ltd is an established leading brick, blockwork and masonry contractor offering a multi-disciplined package to all major main contractors across the United Kingdom. Operating from its Head Office in Essex, Galostar works with companies such as Sir Robert McAlpine, Mace and Balfour Beatty.
The Challenge
The original Management Systems had become disjointed and out of date and no longer fit for purpose. In addition, there was nobody with a working knowledge of the old systems left in the Company. As a consequence, it was decided to start from scratch and create an Integrated Management System, whilst also taking on the responsibility for managing the system.
The Solution
Whilst there was a form of management system in place for each of the standards, the evidence of recent external audits showed that it was no longer fit for purpose. In addition, the people who had looked after the system were no longer with the Company so it was decided that it would be better to adopt what we could and fill in the gaps where necessary.
Working with the Document Controller and the Contracts Manager, a review of the business was carried out using management tools such as PESTEL and SWOT to establish the context of the business. This enabled us to use the bespoke tools we have developed for identifying Interested Parties as well as the significant Aspects and Impacts for the business.
Once established the Management System quickly became a key part of the business, successfully meeting the requirements of external auditors.
Once fully established for the Head Office function, it was then possible to use the IMS to assess and support project sites across London. This included site audits of projects within the Olympic Park at Stratford such as the Mace construction project delivering new facilities for the BBC and Saddlers Wells.
