ISO 14001 Lead Auditors: Hands-On Support From Setup to Audit

ISO 14001 Consultants

Little Green Consulting was built around a dual expertise: we understand ISO management systems inside out, and we understand environmental consultancy itself – permits, planning, ecology and compliance. We build integrated management systems for SMEs across the UK.

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems. The latest edition, ISO 14001:2026, was published this year and replaces ISO 14001:2015.

ISO 14001:2026

ISO 14001 has been revised to add clarity and keep the standard relevant as environmental management practice evolves. If you’re currently certified to ISO 14001:2015, most of what you already have in place still stands. But there are a handful of significant changes:

  • Your EMS scope now needs to account for a life cycle perspective. This means thinking about the upstream and downstream impacts of your business, rather than only its direct impact.
  • Leadership requirements have widened. The standard now expects that support and accountability extend beyond senior management to everyone in a relevant role.
  • There’s a new formal requirement to plan and manage change to your EMS, whether that change comes from inside the business or from external pressure.
  • Emergency planning has been tightened. Instead of preparing for emergencies you can reasonably foresee, you’re now expected to identify all potential emergency situations.
  • Internal audits now need clearly defined objectives for each one, rather than a general audit programme.

Organisations certified to ISO 14001:2015 typically have around three years to transition to the new edition, though your certification body will confirm the exact deadline for your cycle.

We support organisations at every stage of the ISO 14001 journey, far beyond certification itself, and we work on a project basis – so if you’re a larger provider looking to bring in extra capacity, we sit alongside your team rather than compete for the client relationship.

  • Gap analysis against ISO 14001:2026, so you know exactly where your current system might fall short
  • EMS design and implementation, built around your organisation’s day-to-day operations
  • Transition support for organisations already certified to the 2015 edition, managing the move across within your certification cycle
  • Lead auditor support, including acting on your behalf for audit purposes and managing the corrective action process that follows

Our consultants are qualified ISO 14001 Lead Auditors, so the same expertise that builds your system is the expertise that knows exactly what an external auditor will be looking for. Meet the team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do anything if I’m already certified to ISO 14001:2015?

Yes, but not urgently. Certified organisations get a transition window, typically around three years, to move across to the new edition, and your certification body will confirm the exact deadline for your cycle. We can review your current system now and tell you precisely what needs updating, so you’re not scrambling close to your renewal audit.

What’s the real difference between the 2015 and 2026 editions?

Most of the core framework is unchanged. The practical differences are a life cycle perspective built into your scope, wider leadership accountability, a formal requirement to plan for change, and a higher bar on identifying emergency situations. None of it requires starting again, but it does need a proper review rather than a light edit.

Do we need certification, or just a working environmental management system?

That depends on your market. Certification is a recognised way of demonstrating conformity to customers, supply chains and regulators, but plenty of organisations implement ISO 14001 for the operational benefit alone and choose not to certify. We’ll help you weigh that up honestly rather than push you towards certification by default.

How long does implementation or transition typically take?

It depends on where you’re starting from and the complexity of your operations. A gap analysis in the first few weeks gives us a realistic timeline specific to your organisation, rather than a generic estimate that doesn’t hold up.

Can you support us through the audit itself, not just the paperwork?

Yes. We can act as your representative for audit purposes, manage the corrective action process afterwards, and handle the reporting back to senior management, so the whole cycle is covered, not just the document writing.

Whatever stage you’re at with ISO 14001, we can support you.
